Track & Field
Run. Jump. Throw. Achieve.
Track & Field — called Athletics in Special Olympics competition — offers something for nearly every athlete. Events include running and walking races of different distances as well as field events such as the long jump and throwing events. Athletes can choose events that match their interests and abilities while working toward their own personal best.
What athletes need: Comfortable athletic clothing and properly fitted running or athletic shoes. Specialized competition equipment is provided.
Season
Practices generally begin in late winter or early spring, with Area competition during the spring. Qualifying athletes may advance to the Special Olympics Texas Summer Games in late April or early May, which concludes the season.
- January–March: Athlete registration, training, and meet preparation
- March–April: Local/area meets and spring games
- Late April–early May: Texas State Summer Games in Melissa, Texas, usually in late April.
